A1 FLAG IDEAS

windows tabs
just a draft of the windows idea. I am thinking of using different brands of drum machines as the files on the desktop.

simpsons family tree
I hand drawn the family tree. I used significant features of each characters to represent them. The whole idea is hand drawn because lo-fi beats are also known as DIY music, it ties closely with the 'do it yourself' idea that we make it on our own/ hand crafted.

fabric samples
As lo-fi beats are samples of different beats and tracks, I decided to make a flag with samples of patterns/ fabrics. I then thresholded the design to digitalise it like how lo-fi beats are made digitally.

dialogues
This is a page of dialogue samples that are used in lo-fi beats music videos. As some movie dialogues or lines will be extracted and used in some beats, I decided to gather all dialogues and lines on one page to visualise the dialogue sampling idea.

TYPOGATEAUX

idea: modular type

For this task, I wasn't there to make the cake together with my groupmates as the day clashed with my flight. Therefore, we created a WhatsApp group to communicate and I tried my best to provide ideas.

The small cake cubes are movable to form other letters or glyphs.

RESEARCH
Contextual research: music packaging, existing examples
Conceptual research: what you’ve found out about your micro genre, what idea you used from
Practical research: look at how other sleeves are produced, how other screen printings worked, production methods
Analyze the intention and ideas behind your research—link these to your own ideas and work
Correct terminology: letter, word, line, layout
Cognitive skills:
Explore individual ideas to creative opportunities, source materials
Explored at least 5 distinct ideas

GROUP CRIT

NOTES FROM CRIT
simpsons family tree for flag
use a computer window for the flag
apply distortion to the speech bubbles

Today, we did a quick crit on our refined ideas. Ben suggested to apply distortion effect on the speech bubbles idea. Therefore, I decided to try creating distorted effect with the scanner.

The outcome turned out to be really good that some of the original conversations in the speech bubbles are left undistorted, while part of them are being stretched. This can remain the content pf the conversations while fulfilling the idea of distortion. Later on, I will use the knocking out method from photoshop to create 2 layers - one with only white speech bubbles, one with a black background to prepare for screen printing.

Have research, initial ideas, design development done by next week
Research: more on cultural background and history

By the end of this session, I want to have my 5 initial ideas done
After initial ideas àdesign development àrefine and rearrange them, play around with composition and layout

Tomorrow, get the research page sorted.

Design development
for screen printing (outer sleeve) à can print out on paper, evaluate
for flag
for inner sleeve

5 ideas in total > research
rearrange/ using different materials/ in different formats > design development

A1 as an area
find an object for your flag (deconstruct?)
design ideas: only type? only image? type + image? : says sth for your genre
design done by next week
digital printing done after xmas

INITIAL IDEAS

colour plalettes:
glitch: green, red
chillwave: blue, purple

new idea: sampling> tear the screenshots of youtube thumbnails and rearrange them to make a collage

1. distorted grids (audible imperfections, distorted tunes, dreamy, glitch)

2. using the sound graphs of the two tracks + screen printing holographic foil method

track1 on from inner sleeve

 track2 on back outer sleeve

3. glitching rivers of track names (fact: glitchy sounds, 24/7 playing)
Using the titles and the producers of the 2 tracks, I made rivers and divided them into small blocks. I non-stop duplicated the tracks as the chillwave livestreams on Youtube are played 24/7 that there seems to have no end to the video.

As there are significant glitching sounds throughout the two tracks, I then rearranged the rivers and chopped them off to from a glitch.

I overlaid it with a duplicated layer to strengthen the glitch effect.

I then decided to print it out and tear the paper into small pieces and put them back together. This idea is provoked by the sampling music of chillwave, that sometimes, tracks are produced by putting together parts of different tracks together.

4. pixel speech bubbles

5.  collage
6. own beat (can be used on flag)
I made black blocks

combine 3, 5?

OWN BEAT MIDI ON SLEEVE

Using the beat that i made on my own, I converted them into solid blocks on Illustrator. I spaced the blocks according to the ratio of spacings of the original track.

I then put them on the sleeve. I placed it in the centre which means that some of the blocks will be located at the fold of the front and back cover. As I am planning to screen print foil on the blocks, it is possible that the foil will break or crack at the fold. Therefore, i decided to place the track on the front cover.
I used purple for the background as it is the most significant colour to be seen in the chill wave Youtube videos.

WEEKLY BRIEF + WHAT TO DO

Today - Research day
Tue- design principle, cop
Cop submission next Tuesday
Thurs- digital inductions + next thurs
Fri – development

Bring more cards for printing àexperiments
 7Janàcoating + printing

TODAY
1.    Get your digital positives ready for screen printing
2.    Research design board (stick to the given template)
3.    Initial ideas design board: 5x initial ideas
4.    Blog posts
Research àfind a grid!! Find a number!! Ratio?
Find something specific about a specific person àto make it more objective

Make sure ALL the elements are justified by your research
-      Colour
-      Choice of card and paper stock
-      Your approach to typography
-      Layout/ grid
-      Images used and their treatment (collage, painting over, tracing, scanning...)

5x initial ideas– these can be applied to:
7” outer ?(Card) sleeve
7” inner (paper) sleeve
A1 flag
(inserts – stickers, posters, print, etc.)

Research
-      on micro-genre (political, social)
-      /analysis of design within your micro-genre (find out ideas behind the designs)
-      On specific record sleeve designs àanalyze and explain the ideas n reasons behind them

*make it simple on the outer sleeve to make it easier for screen printing
Outer: cardàscreen print
Inner: paper àdigital print
