(SB1) CONCEPTUAL RESEARCH

MY VISIT TO THE NUNNERY
  • me and my friends began to quiet down the moment we stepped into the area
  • eating and drinking was not allowed
  • we were not allowed to sit on the stairs or the ground to take pictures
  • we became really serious when we heard the buddhist scripture and began to stop chatting
  • the environment gave me a feeling of mindfulness and meditation
  • quick city escape
  • smelled like sandalwood everywhere in the area

THE CHI LIN NUNNERY
  • The Chi Lin Nunnery uses the traditional Tang Dynasty architectural techniques
  • It is constructed entirely with cypress wood, without the use of any nails, and is currently the world's largest hand-made wooden building
  • wooden dowels and bracket-work hold its 228,000 pieces of timber together
  • The Chinese believe that the use of wood to build houses extends the life span of trees and they in turn fill the buildings with life.
  • This construction is based on traditional Chinese architectural techniques that uses special interlocking systems cut into the wood to hold them in place.
  • The complex with 16 halls, a library, a school, a pagoda, a bell tower and a drum tower, covers an area of more than 33,000 square metres (360,000 sq ft)
  • Feng Shui principles governed construction. The buildings face south towards the sea, to bring abundance; their back is to the mountain, provider of strength and good energy.
  • The layout of the Chi Lin Monastery emphasizes the open space and harmony between Heaven and Earth.
  • lotus ponds symbolises purity
  • wind chimes are hung at the corners of the rooftops
  • dragon face door knockersIn China, the dragon is a symbol of celestial (Heavenly) and terrestrial (Earthly) power, wisdom, and strength. According to Chinese mythology, the dragon controls rainfall.
CALMING, MEDITATING COLOURS
  • your body and your mind both have reactions to seeing colors. Brighter colors usually stimulate your brain and energize you, potentially even making you feel a little anxious.
  • soothing color and can help to calm a busy mind.
  • Peaceful, calm and gentle, blue has tremendous power to manage stress
  • helps calm your mind, slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety

BUILDINGS IN HONG KONG

  • The city with the world’s tiniest and costliest living spaces may soon convert drainpipes into homes. The aim is to get young people on the property ladder – but how small is too small?

  • I feel like the buildings are fully packed that they could become a small scaled grid system.
WORDS THAT FRIENDS CAME UP WITH ABOUT BUILDINGS IN HONG KONG

  • repetitive
  • packed
  • chopstick housings
  • economic inequality- rich poor gap
  • tall
  • skyscrapers
  • cramped
  • look all the same

CITY ESCAPE

  • feel detached from the city
  • a tiny utopia in the city
  • soothing and relaxing
  • without any pressure
  • to get away or break free from the suffocating city
  • big contrast (urban /buildings/ city VS rural/ nature/ parks)
