DESIGN SKILLS TASK 1

WHAT WE DID TODAY:

To start off the monday morning, the teacher introduced us different kinds of machines that can produce typography. A machine makes use of mechanical power to transmit force. It is dependant on rules and has instructions to follow in order to work. Machines can be of different forms like a stencil, a set of objects, a drawing device, a game, a grid system, etc.

After introducing machines, we started to sketch our own typeface out on grid papers. We actually did quite a lot of work today. In class, we were given a lot of grid papers and were asked to create 25 of different typeface in an hour. We were suggested to use different techniques like thickening, duplicating or stretching to make different system of words. The teacher stressed on iteration and asked us to repeat what we were doing and try to modify and change our work again and again in order to create the best out of our initial ideas.

The task we did today definitely pushed me a lot in stimulating my ideas. The aim of the task is to produce a large quantity of work in a limited time. Under the time limiting stress, I was so focused on my work and created more than I expected. I was really impressed by the outcome when I looked back to the development and process of my work.
