FFEDBACK
People really like the typeface and most of the feedback about the typeface was positive. Ben thought that the typeface could be more scattered. This is really interesting as one of the main concerns that our group discussed about was the legibility of the typeface. I am really surprised that Ben suggested the typeface could be designed in a more playful and daring way.
Also, I agree that the posters should be redesigned to look more playful. The posters looked "too serious" which did not really match our theme of being playful. Having the posters printed in a square was also a very good idea to match the theme and to keep everything consistent.
Someone suggested that the shaped cut out from the vinyl on the window should be a bit bigger to have people able to peak through a bit more. I don't really agree with this as the aim of the whole branding is to make audiences feel puzzled and their point of view should be "?"/ confused. Therefore, having the shapes on the wall being smaller can remain the audience feeling puzzled and feel hard to peak through.
BRIEF EVALUATION
Overall, I think that we did a very good job in this exhibition branding brief. I really like my group in a way that everyone was responsible for a specific role and had their own character in the group. Leon was there to bring up the atmosphere and have everyone involved in chatting with each other, Zoe was there to lead us, Han and I were mostly responsible for the visuals of the whole branding, etc. This group really worked together well in cooperating with each other. Although some groupmates may not be fully participating in the process, we tried our best in helping each other out and giving each other advice in different aspects in order to get the fullest result.
Our group was a bit behind from the others in terms of producing designs physically. We officially started making things physically on the second and third day and did screenprinting on the third day. However, I don't think that this had pulled us behind as on the first two days, we focused on developing concepts and ideas. We planned out everything and started making them after having a semi-completed plan. When we started making things physically, we coped with challenges, refined and further developed our initial ideas according to the failures that we faced. I really like this process of work refinements that were based on the challenges that we were facing, the refinements were pinpointing the specific things that did not work.
To be honest, I am really grateful that I was being grouped with these people as they all were very nice and friendly. We shared ideas and talked about everything. Sometimes we were serious about our work, sometimes we have a relaxed atmosphere. I really like when in those "serious" times, we will self-initiate meetings and crits. We will sit in the crit room and talk about ideas and how we could fix the problems that we were facing. I love the feeling of sitting together and talk about our ideas on the same theme, I could feel the passion and enthusiasm of us towards the project and that we all would like to devote our best effort in making the whole thing work. Having the brief in a competition form actually motivates us and make us really want to work to our best. I feel like it is not about winning or losing anymore, instead, all we cared about was the process and making the whole thing works out the best. The outcome reflects our effort put into the whole project and it was really satisfying when we saw people liked our ideas and that our effort has been paid off undoubtedly.
On the other hand, I feel like I am not a "group work person". Throughout the whole project, I know that I was a bit stubborn and picky. I know that this is teamwork, but when it comes to making things using the idea that I created, I really would like to have the whole thing being perfectly presented. For example, the typeface that I did was being used as the main visual theme of the whole project. I really would like it to look perfect, without any flaws. Charlie and Leon did help out with finishing the typeface and that I can see they've tried and put a lot of effort in cooperating with my ideas in making the typeface, however, the typeface that they made did not turn out to look "perfect", as in applying the rule that I had made. I pointed out the mistakes and tried my best to explain to them how to make the typeface in Illustrator. They did try so hard in refining them. However, I thought that it would be the most efficient way if I make the whole typeface myself, therefore, I took over the job in creating the whole typeface, when the role of "making typeface" was actually set to be their job. Wanting outcomes to be perfectly presented is undoubtedly a good thing, however, I should not have done it on my own. I should have co-operated with them and accept the fact that this is teamwork and that accepting other's work is the most important thing when it comes to working as a team. Fortunately, we all worked along well and they did not seem to think that I did anything wrong and offended them. Hopefully, in the coming group work next year, I would be less stubborn and more open to other's opinion and work.
Also, in the process of designing, I also learnt that using mind maps are a really good way to make clear our ideas. Mind mapping helped us a lot in categorising our ideas and to push further our ideas. I will definitely use mind maps for the coming projects in order to make organise my ideas.
